![]() The lens measures approximately 10.14×14.99 cm / 4×5.9” in size, weighs about 1.170g/4.31oz, comes with a detachable tripod collar, and features a dust- and splash-resistant design. Additionally, a Manual Focus Lock switch on the lens barrel enables you to lock the lens into manual focus mode, thus avoiding unintentional changes in focus distance. Lastly, the lens is equipped with an HLA (High-Response Linear Actuator) autofocus motor that is claimed to be accurate and quiet. The front lens cap has two slots to store filters. Also, the front of the barrel has a small ridge to prevent heat strips from accidentally falling in front of the lens, potentially ruining your night shot or a time-lapse sequence. Up to 2 of these can be stored in the inner side of the locking front cap. The back of the lens features a filter holder to accommodate rear filters. The f/1.4 aperture has a 9-blade design, and the lens barrel features a physical aperture ring that supports both clicked and de-clicked operation, thus allowing you to perform an iris pull when shooting videos. SIGMA 14mm F1.4 DG DN Art ultra-wide angle. It produces a 114° field of view when paired with a full-frame imaging sensor. Given its extremely fast aperture, the lens is engineered specifically for astrophotography and low-light scenarios. The new SIGMA 14mm F1.4 DG DN Art is an ultra wide-angle prime lens designed to work with full-frame mirrorless cameras featuring a Sony E or Leica L mount. keyboard_arrow_rightCameras of the Year.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Type.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Budget. ![]() The lens is also compatible with Samyang's "Lens Station" ($99) which can be used for firmware upgrades, focus calibration, and manual focus tuning. Manual focusing works by-wire thus you are driving the AF motor when turning the focus ring. The AF motor is fairly quick and noiseless. The lens cap clamps to the lens hood which is the common approach for such lenses as well. Typical for such lenses, it features a built-in, petal-shaped hood which is a good idea for protecting the big vulnerable front element anyway. As you can see below the front element is slightly protruding so it's not possible to mount front filters. The fixed part of the barrel has a satin finish which is a little slippery. The lens body is made of metal including the smoothly operating focus ring. The build quality of the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE is very good. Strangely, the Rokinon is a little more expensive than the OEM version. ![]() It's worth noting that the lens is also available under the Rokinon brand name (primarily in the US). Of course, this raises the question of what degree of performance you could possibly expect given the engineering constraints within the given price frame. There is another aspect that is distinguishing it - its price tag of just 500USD/EUR. As of the time of this review, it's still the widest autofocus prime lens for Sony FE cameras although there are zoom lenses that go even wider. One end of these extremes is in the ultra-wide segment and the Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 FE is one of the examples here. Manufacturers love to explore the extremes because that's a way of differentiating their offerings from the competition. Review by Klaus Schroiff, published July 2020 ![]()
